See the stars Beverly-Begg Observatory
#35 Do - on Earth Day, as part of the Wild Dunedin Festival of Nature, I went to the Beverly-Begg Observatory in Belleknowes which was built in 1922 by the Dunedin Astronomical Society and named after Arthur Beverly and John Campbell Begg. Mr Beverly was a mathematician and astronomer who emigrated to Dunedin in 1858 and made a refracting telescope that is still at the Observatory (see photo). He died in 1907 and donated money to the University of Otago to help young people who had 'talent and industry but not wealth' which continues to fund prizes and fellowships in maths and physics today. Mr Begg was born in Roslyn, Dunedin in 1876, studied physics and philosophy at Otago University, he was a founder of the Observatory and donated a 12 inch reflector in 1921 to the Observatory. Tonight I saw Jupiter, the Jewel Box and Omega Centauri
