Bendigo Historic Reserve
#64 Do - explore the ruins of the miners cottages in Welshtown in the Bendigo Historic Reserve. When gold was discovered in Otago, it triggered a migration boom with many coming to Bendigo from Bendigo and Ballarat in Victoria, Australia (hence the name) but also Scotland, England and Wales. In 1875 Welshtown was a residential town with a cluster of huts, gardens and stables. Many huts were corrugated iron and wood (easier to put down and take to the next gold hot spot) but these beautiful stone cottages are still standing.
