Mrs Jones' Apples
#73 Eat - local apples! I bought a giant bag of Red Braeburn apples from Mrs Jones' Fruit Stall near Cromwell last week. Mrs Jones opened her fruit stall in 1980 planning to have a little roadside stall where she could read in the sun and sell some fruit from the family run orchard (doesn't this sound lovely) but it was so busy she is yet to read a book! Although, this is not surprising as it's always humming with people after fresh fruit (and their great dried apricots). Central Otago has the perfect apple growing climate - hot, dry summers and cool autumns, and is New Zealand's third largest apple producing region. The Red Braeburn apples are crispy and sweet to eat and also great to cook with, perfect for apple crumble for dessert tonight with an essential large dollop of cream!
