Centenary Lookout Port Chalmers
#78 Do - watch the port activity from the Centenary Lookout in Port Chalmers and think of 135 years ago. The wharf near Observation Point is where the sailing ship 'Dunedin' left New Zealand with the first successful shipment of frozen meat to Britain. It had a coal-powered freezing plant to keep the 5000 carcasses of mutton frozen. The ship departed on the 15th February 1882, arriving in London in late May, and only one carcass was condemned. It was a moment that influenced the economic prosperity of our country significantly and it happened right here!
