The Captain Cook Hotel

#88 Drink - a beer from The Captain Cook Hotel aka 'The Cook'. It first opened in 1864 during the Otago gold rush. The original wooden building was demolished and the hotel was rebuilt in 1874 - the building that stands today. The Cook was a key venue where many local bands played in the 1980s, creating Dunedin Sound. After many years of helping create memories for Otago students (although some may be hazy.....!) it closed in 2014. A huge thank you to the local owners of the building and the current publican, Sheldon Lye, for bringing it back to life when it re-opened in April 2016 having had an elegant refurbishment. It's now a sophisticated gastro-pub with friendly staff and great beer
