The Bay of Flying Sand

#105 Do - woolly hat, duffle coat, multiple merino layers and gumboots = ready to head to the beach! Today, on a wet and foggy Dunedin day, I drove about 20 mins out of the city and walked through sheep paddocks to the stunningly isolated Sandfly Bay. You would expect to require a large dose of insect repellent here, but I learnt today that it's actually known as Sandfly Bay (bay of flying sand) due to the wild coastal winds causing sand movement. Also known for its wildlife, Sandfly Bay is home to yellow-eyed penguins (hoiho), fur seals (kekeno) and sea lions (pakake). It's a great short walk.
