Quartz Reef Winemaker's Dinner

#108 Do - celebrate local wines from Central Otago at a winemaker's dinner. Tonight we had an entertaining and fun evening of wine hosted by winemaker Rudi Bauer from Quartz Reef matched with amazing food by Billy and his team at No.7 Balmac. In stunning Central Otago, Quartz Reef was established by Rudi in 1996 with support from local merino sheep farmer John Perriam. I loved learning a little of the history of the area, as the vineyard sits on New Zealand's largest quartz rock deposit in Bendigo. In 1862 gold was discovered in Bendigo Creek and a year later gold-bearing quartz reefs were found stretching into the hills resulting in hard-rock mining, by 1875 the Bendigo reef was considered the richest in Otago.
