Silver Stream Water Race Track

#109 Do - find the little paths in the bush in the Silver Stream Water Race Tracks. Today was along the Steve Amies to the Little Coal Creek as a first explore of this area. Muddy but beautiful bush and occasional great view. 29km of Silver Stream Water Race was developed in 1881 to provide additional water for Dunedin. It was abandoned in 1960 after flooding and buried pipelines replaced the (not quite as successful as hoped) open water race. In the 1980s the Track Clearing Group worked to re-open the tracks along with a local tramping group. The late Steve Amies was instrumental in getting these tracks re-opened, and local groups continue to help maintain them. Excited to go back and explore more.
