Nineteen Fathom Foul
#115 Do - I learnt a little bit of maritime history when checking out the 'Nineteen Fathom Foul' anchor at the Port Chalmers Centenary Lookout today. The anchor was lost off an unknown sailing ship and hauled ashore in 1978 after many years of fouling local fishing nets and caused a capsize resulting in a drowning in 1966. It was described as a menace to fishermen, and when it was brought ashore, it was adorned with many nets. I also learnt that nineteen fathoms refers to the depth of the water - I had no idea what a fathom was (1 fathom = 1.829m)! Love learning and the local history in Port Chalmers and the great view, although I did have to be careful of some very car-friendly chickens by the anchor ⚓️
