War Hero - Archibald Baxter

#129 Do - attend Opera Otago's performance of War Hero at the Mayfair Theatre. War Hero is based on the interesting story of local man Archibald Baxter. Born in 1881 in Saddle Hill, he was a hard working farmer who was opposed to war. In 1916 military conscription was introduced, and soon after he was arrested and jailed for being a conscientious objector. In July 1917 he was sent to war and subjected to physical and mental abuse for his beliefs. On returning to New Zealand he wrote a book, We Will Not Cease, on his experiences as a pacifist. War Hero was composed by John Drummond, who has significantly contributed to music in our community for many years. This is the world premier of this opera! I bought my ticket today from Miracle - I'm excited to attend tonight's performance and support these talented locals
