Caramilk and Mr Richard Hudson
#132 Do - celebrate locally made Caramilk and the start of our city's chocolate history. Richard Hudson (born Daniel Bullock) arrived in Dunedin in 1868 with his wife Mary. From humble beginnings, he established a biscuit factory in Princes St with great success. The business expanded into confectionery and chocolate and prospered. Mr Hudson was an advocate of an 8 hour work day and the first in Dunedin at the time to stop manufacturing on Saturday afternoons. British chocolate manufacturer Cadbury and Hudson amalgamated in 1930 and went on to developed many iconic Kiwi sweet treats including Pineapple Lumps, Tangy Fruits, Snifters, Jaffas, Sparkles - the memories. Cadbury's factory in Dunedin has done a special run of an old favourite of mine - Caramilk, and the factory cafe is doing a Caramilk hot chocolate at the moment! Cadbury has contributed so much to our community including raising over a million dollars for local charities since 2002 and it will be very sad to see it close its doors in 2018.
