Tommy Thomson Scenic Drive

#147 Do - experience the Tommy Thomson scenic drive from Queenstown to Glenorchy. Tommy Thomson was a mining engineer who came to the district in 1942 to survey Glenorchy's scheelite mines, where he married a local girl, Reta. They bought Mt Earnslaw station and in the 1950s, Tommy was key in promoting the need for an access road to Glenorchy. Prior to this, Glenorchy residents were dependent on the Wakatipu steamships (a regular service was the Earnslaw three time a week) for almost a century. In 1962 the road from Queenstown to Glenorchy opened. It's a beautiful drive, even on a wet and windy day when the clouds cover the mountain views...
