Moke Lake
#150 Do - walk or jog the DOC track to Moke Lake. Apparently named Moke after the donkey that was the first to encounter it (moke being another name for donkey). In the 1860s gold was found in the area near Moke Creek and Moonlight Creek - the area was heavily sluiced with an estimated $4 million worth of gold found. I parked on Glenorchy Road, headed up the track past Lake Dispute and through farmland to Moke Lake. The sign indicated it would take 6-8 hours return, but a slow jog, with stops for photos, was about 2.5 hours return. Amazing feeling of being alone in nature in beautiful New Zealand, along with some sheep, rabbits and a circling hawk...
