Outram Glen Taieri Track

#167 Do - to celebrate the first day of spring, I headed to Outram to jog the Outram Glen track along the Taieri River. Lots of cute lambs in paddocks on the drive there and blossom along the trail confirmed it really was spring regardless of the murky day! Mostly flat with river views, it's a great trail run or walk and only about 5km return, although you can choose to go further along to Lee Stream. There's flood damage to the river edge with trees uprooted but only a little damage to the track. I learnt that the Superintendent of Otago in 1861, Major John Richardson, named Outram after Sir James Outram. He was an English General who was considered a hero when he fought at Lucknow, in the Indian Mutiny, in 1857. This was at a time when Otago settlers had especially close ties to India, with many having relatives and friends living in India or having served in India.
