#177 Do - Grahams Bush Scenic Reserve Track was my explore today. The native bush was beautiful with ferns being great protection from the rain. I read that the land was bought off a farmer in 1910 to protect one of the remaining stands of kāmahi forest in the area, and was originally called Mount Cargill Reserve, but re-named in the 1960s when a second reserve was proposed on Mount Cargill (and therefore had more right to the name!) so became Grahams Bush Scenic Reserve. Unfortunately after a wee bit of research, I'm not quite sure who Graham was - but would love to know if anyone has an idea! I did read of a Mr Henry Graham who established the first newspaper in Otago and also was known to have clashed with Captain William Cargill over his editorials in the 1840s - but no links to the land! The track was very muddy and slippery, but reminded me how lucky we are to live in this amazing place.
