Road Trip to Aparima

#201 Do - road trip to Aparima/Riverton! A stunning little seaside town on the south coast that I was lucky enough to explore for a couple of hours today. Pre-European it was a Māori settlement called Aparima, and became known as Riverton when Captain John Howell set up a whaling station there in the 1830s, calling it Little River Town. It's the oldest Pākehā settlement in Otago and Southland and I've tried to capture some of the beauty in 10 snaps....(see photos on Instagram or Facebook - my blog seems to have trouble uploading these) I picked up a map and some great tips from the information centre before 1) I headed over the estuary and past the port to 2) Taramea/Howells Point and walked the track to Back Beach and 3) found simple beauty amongst the stones 4) drove back along the Rocks Highway and stop at one of the many beaches and encouraged by children swimming....I braved the water! 5) loved the interesting sand patterns 6) lunch stop at The Crib - simple but delicious 'Cowboy Beans' 7) headed up to More's Reserve and walked through the native bush track to the lookout 8) to find a great view 9) back to Palmerston St to look up at the pressed tin ceiling in the Postmasters Cafe (the original post office building) and bought one of their famous custard squares 10) sat in the sun on a dock to ponder how long until I can come back with PJ for a summer holiday!
