Chingford Stables

#206 Do - visit the Chingford Stables in Chingford Park tucked away in the North East Valley. The original estate was named Chingford by owner Dr Andrew Buchanan in 1861 after his home in England. The estate was bought by Percival Clay Neill, a Dunedin merchant, in 1877 and it was his home for 6 decades. The stables were built in 1880, and housed horses of the wealthy until a fire gutted the building in 1890 and work was required to rebuild the interior. When Mr Neill died in 1936, the estate was bequeathed to the city of Dunedin and it was developed as a park and recreation ground. Sadly, the original homestead was demolished in 1968 when it was considered too costly to restore but the park, the gardens with enormous old trees, and stables are beautiful to stroll around.
