Lady Thorn Rhododendron Dell
#213 - Explore the Lady Thorn Rhododendron Dell. This gorgeous wee garden in Port Chalmers was established in 1990 to recognise the service and commitment of Lady Thorn to the Port Chalmers district. Lady Thorn was the wife of Sir John Thorn who was Mayor of Port Chalmers from 1956-1989. The Dell was originally the Port Chalmers quarry, the brecia rock was used in the construction of many stone buildings in Dunedin and Port Chalmers in the 1800s and the pocket became overgrown with weeds and rubbish. It was Lady Thorn's vision to create the garden, and the local Lions Club spent many hours transforming the quarry into the beautiful space it is now - I love that it has so many places to sit, lots of little paths and a great lookout. This Saturday is the Heritage Day Garden Fete at the Dell from 11-3pm
