Old Dunedin Prison
#231 Do - Tour the old Dunedin Prison. It was first occupied in 1898 with cells for 52 men and 20 women and it held prisoners right up until 2007. Designed by a Government Architect, John Campbell, in Queen Anne style with a central courtyard, it is thought to be the only Victorian courtyard prison remaining in Australasia. It was bought by the Dunedin Prison Trust to conserve and restore the building under its Heritage NZ category 1 listing. A lovely old building on the outside, it is definitely grim on the inside. A fascinating tour, they run every Saturday morning from October to April. So interesting to see inside, learn the history and of the escapes and support the ongoing conservation of this historic building.
