Schlosshotel Kronberg

#253 Do - A night in a German castle. Having landed into Frankfurt, we headed to Schlosshotel Kronberg. Originally named Schloss Friedrichshof by the German Empress Victoria (Queen Victoria's eldest daughter) after her husband Emperor Friedrich III. It was built in 1893 and was the Empress's home until her death in 1901, when her daughter Princess Margaret of Prussia inherited it. Interesting to learn that the family jewels were buried in a cellar of the castle by Princess Margaret's son Wolfgang, but were stolen in 1945 - only 10% of what was stolen has been recovered and returned to the family. Art, furnishings, and the Empress's impressive library, remain in the hotel. We had an incredible breakfast in the elegant dining room.
