Rothenburg ob der Tauber City Walls
#255 Do - jog the city walls of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany's best-preserved walled medieval town. To avoid the crowds, we arrived in Rothenburg in the evening, and walked the cobbled streets through light snowfall. We past many, many Christmas ornament stores and ate a Schneeball, a local treat of a fried ball of pie crust (interesting to try but wouldn't go back for a second!) and headed to Burg. Hotel. A family owned and run hotel for the last 40 years, it was built in 1212 to house the horse riders for the castle owner, a great spot. But the best part of our stay, was hopping up in the morning and jogging the incredible city walls just on sunrise. Narrow stone staircases, tight spaces at times, but with views of the city and the countryside, the 2.5km loop that runs along the inside of the fortified wall is amazing.
