Murdering Beach

#278 Do - Run the track to the secluded cove known as Murdering Beach. In 1817 the sealing brig Sophia arrived in Otago Harbour (known as Port Daniel at the time) from Tasmania. It is thought that Captain Kelly and some of his crew took a small boat into Whareakeake to trade with Māori, who had a settlement on the flat behind the beach. Conflict arose on the beach and then on the brig between Māori and the Europeans, tragically resulting in casualties on both sides, and the beach became known as Murdering Beach. Excavations of the settlement found many greenstone hei tiki, ornaments and implements in the years following. On a drizzly morning it was a slightly eerie but interesting explore of another stunning Dunedin beach. And a good challenge getting back up the hill 😪
