The Maniototo
#292 Do - Explore the beautiful Maniototo. Today we headed towards Hamiltons, the tiny town near Waipiata, where PJ’s Great Great Grandfather came in the late 1880s in search of gold. In 1863 gold was discovered in the region and up to 4000 miners were drawn to the area. In 1914 a tuberculosis sanatorium was built, and although this building still stands, very little else of the township remains. The scenery of this part of Otago is stunning and so worth exploring.
