The Crown Range

#301 Do - Drive over the Crown Range for beautiful tussock and lupin covered hills and the view over the Wakatipu basin at the summit. At 1076m above sea level, it's one of the highest sealed roads in New Zealand (sealed in 2000). The first Europeans to cross the pass were looking for sheep pasture in 1860, and the first tourist trips, using horse drawn carriages, started in 1877. A favourite route of mine, we headed up from the Cardrona Valley side this afternoon
