The Portsider

#308 Do - Head to the historic Portsider in Port Chalmers. Locally owned by Pip (a Dunedin girl) and Hanz (originally from Amsterdam), they bought the pub in 2013 having returned to NZ after living in Europe. The Portsider is a great spot to sit, try a range of NZ craft beers and Hanz’s traditional Dutch bar snack, bitterballen, is delicious! The pub was built in 1880, and around that time, it was one of many pubs in the small town serving locals and visiting sailors. At one point, Port Chalmers had the most pubs per capita than anywhere in NZ. I learnt it was one of few to survive after Port Chalmers residents voted for prohibition - the town was ‘dry’ from 1902 to 1905.
