The Scenic Route North
#314 Do - A road trip north taking the scenic route from Dunedin. First stop was the little seaside town, Karitane, with its isolated, rustic, beautiful beach, it’s a great spot for a stroll. Back in the car, we turned off SH1 into Waianakarua Road, fantastic coastal views as you head to Kakanui. Just south of Oamaru, we found the most enormous field of sunflowers, with only a couple looking perky on this cloudy day! North Otago is known for growing sunflowers since the 1970s, with most going into birdseed. The impressive fields are full of flowers from mid to late summer. Our last stop before crossing the Waitaki was a cute little cafe in Oamaru, Tees St. for coffee and cake. Locally owned by Pablo and Yanina, originally from Argentina, their dulce de leche donut and caramel slice was quite scrumptious
