St Joseph’s Cathedral Dunedin
#324 Do - Step inside St Joseph's Cathedral in Dunedin. This impressive Gothic Revival style building, designed by architect Francis Petre, was completed in 1886. Once a deep gully with a creek, the cathedral sits on an elevated site (it required significant foundations) in Rattray St. Interestingly, it was never completed according to Mr Petre's original design, considered to be his largest and grandest project, due to concerns about the costs. Apparently it would have been the biggest cathedral in the Southern Hemisphere if it had been completed according to the drawings, and even at approximately a quarter of the intended size, it is a beautiful building and lovely to step inside.
