Penguin Place Rehabilitation Centre

#Do - Amazing to see penguins up close at the Penguin Place Rehabilitation Centre today as part of the Wild Dunedin Festival. Opening in the early 1990s, the centre treats approximately 100 injured penguins each year and around 90% survive to be released back to nature. Chrystal, the yellow-eyed penguin, is having her second stint in rehab having diced with death not once, but twice, after being attacked by a shark for the second time in two years. She’s named after Chrystall’s Beach where she was first found injured in 2017, and is currently in the middle of molting her feathers. We were lucky to see 18 of the current inpatients today, I was totally mesmerised! Looking forward to returning and doing a tour of the conservation reserve.
