The Humble Cheese Roll

#Eat - The humble cheese roll. Famous in the South, the cheesy, buttery, crispy tubes of goodness are often found in the cabinets of cafés and tearooms around the region. A recipe for a cheese roll, known back then as a 'rat trap' was first published in the New Zealand Truth in 1935, and they became increasingly popular in the South by the 1950s. The recipe has changed a little over time, especially when the packet of onion soup mix and tin of evaporated milk became the quick and convenient key ingredients, but they are simple, tasty, comfort food on a cold day. I can highly recommend the cheese rolls I found in The Stable Kitchen in Gore as I strolled the town 👌
