Buttar’s Peak
Buttar’s Peak. Incredible volcanic rocks and views up a little track just off the Mount Cargill Track heading towards the Organ Pipes, about a 10 minute detour. It’s not super obvious where the track goes (through some flax) and involves a couple of big rocky steps up, but is so worth it. According to Māori legend, Buttar’s Peak is the head of a prominent Māori warrior, Mount Cargill peak is the stomach, with the ridge line forming the profile of the warrior reclining which we can see from the city. The peak is named after the Buttar family, who farmed the area and it is one of my favourite spots to lie on a rock in the sun. A fun Labour Day outing ⛰
