St Patrick’s Basilica in Oamaru. I had the opportunity to pop inside and see this lovely building as I drove north on Thursday. Completed in 1918, it was designed by Francis Petre and took 25 years to build. It was constructed using local Oamaru stone from a quarry in Weston and has a beautiful ceiling made up of 78 zinc panels. According to an article in the 1898 Oamaru Mail, these were painted by the Reverend Dean Mackay and some local school children ‘some of the best pupils of the Convent school’ before the panels were put into place.
