Otago Central Rail Trail

The Olrig Gangers’ Shed along the Otago Central Rail Trail. We did just a section of what was once a 152km railway line that passes through rural Central Otago with sheep stations, dry and rocky landscapes, tunnels, gorges and viaducts. The railway line was originally built between 1891 and 1907, providing an economic link to Dunedin, enabling fruit growing and sheep farming to prosper. Considered New Zealand’s first ‘Great Ride’, it has many places where you can pop on and off the trail. We did the Alexandra to the Chatto Creek Tavern section. About 17km along a flat track in the warmth with cicadas chirping.
