Lake Hayes

A swing for a summery day at Lake Hayes. Thought to be named after a Scottish explorer, Donald Hay, who spent two weeks zigzagging across Lake Wakatipu on a moki (a raft made of bundles of flax or raupō stalks) in 1859, landing at Frankton and then exploring on foot. As part of this trip, he was thought to have been the first to sight ‘Hay’s Lake’. Then, for some reason, it was documented incorrectly in government charts as Lake Hayes. After dropping PJ off early this morning to Queenstown airport, I zoomed around the lake, attempting to beat the wet weather. I love this 7km ish loop for the views and relatively flat track.
