Boat and Train Spotting
Lockdown loop #20
We went looking for boats and trains today. We crossed the Jetty Street overpass down to Steamer Basin. Trucks, trains, boats, bikes, even a forklift was spotted.
We also learnt about New Zealand’s worst naval tragedy when we came across the memorial honouring the men who lost their lives. In 1941 the Royal Navy cruiser HMS Neptune ran into a minefield in the Mediterranean. 764 men lost their lives, and of these 150 were from New Zealand, with 30 from Otago. But there was one survivor who was rescued by an Italian torpedo boat after 5 days in the water.
There are no flowers on a sailor’s grave
No lilies on an ocean wave
The only tribute is the seagull’s sweep
And the teardrop on a loved one’s cheek
Anon.
