We weaved around Stafford, Carroll and Maclaggan St this morning and came across Ralph Hotere by Tyler Kennedy Stent. Completed in 2018, Tyler started the mural before midday on a Wednesday and worked through the night to complete it on the Thursday. Incredible! Born in Northland, Ralph Hotere first came to Dunedin in the early 1950s, studying at the Teachers’ College and specialising in art at the King Edward Technical College. He returned permanently in 1969 when he was awarded the Frances Hodgkins Fellowship and once said ‘in Dunedin they accept I am a painter and leave me to go about my work.’
